The Company's principal activity is the manufacture of chemicals. Operations are carried out through the following divisions: Basic chemicals and Petrochemicals (organic and inorganic industrial chemicals, almin, plastics, synthetic rubber etc); Speciality chemicals (fine chemicals, dyestuffs, IT-related chemicals, optical materials, agricultural chemicals, fertilizers and pharmaceuticals) and Others (electric power, industrial chemical equipment, construction management, transport and warehouse operations). Basic chemicals and Petrochemicals accounted for 50% of fiscal 2004, while Pharmaceuticals accounted for 15%, Agrochemicals 14%, Fine Chemicals 9% and IT Related Chemicals 7%.

Australian agricultural chemicals firm Nufarm Ltd (ASX:NUF) says it has been notified by Japan's Sumitomo Chemical Company Ltd (TYO:4005) that its offer for 20 per cent of Nufarm is now unconditional. The tender offer for Nufarm shares from Sumitomo Chemical has received acceptances totalling 81.45 per cent of all Nufarm share.
