Perth, Nov 20, 2007 (ABN Newswire) - Stirling Products (ASX: STI) advises that, following an announcement last week by the Canadian retailer Co-op Atlantic and its partner the Natural Organic Food Group (NOFG) that they will commence selling Omega-3 enhanced pork products, Stirling Products North America (SPNA) expects increased distribution sales revenue from its Omega-3 premix supplied to the partnership. SPNA, based on Prince Edward Island, Canada, has the exclusive rights to distribute the Omega-3 premix which is currently manufactured to proprietary specifications by KenPal Inc., a leading Canadian supplier of custom premixes and nutritional supplements.
The announcement indicated that the partnership between Co-op Atlantic and the NOFG will make available to its customers, Omega-3 pork products raised by local farmers that feed their swine a natural and strict diet primarily of soybean and flaxseed.
"This is great news for our Canadian operation," indicated Dr Calvin London, CEO and Managing Director of Stirling Products. "Although the highly purified beta glucan ProVale(tm) is the major product from this operation, we are keen to expand our sales of Omega-3 premix. This recent announcement strengthens the partnership that we have with NOFG and we look forward to assisting in their success."
Omega-3 fatty acids have long been recognised for their health benefits, such as improving heart and vascular health, but are not manufactured by the human body. The ability to enrich pork products, especially bacon fat, is seen as an attractive alternative for humans to increase their intake of Omega-3's compared to fish products, which are naturally high in Omega-3 oils.
"This year, PBI handled over 160,000 kilograms of the Omega-3 premix for NOFG and its contract producers," indicated the President of Stirling Products North America, Mr Shane Patelakis. Canada (the largest producer of flax in the world, 770,000 US tons per annum) has embarked on an innovative plan to increase its competitiveness in the pork markets by offering a range of niche products that are safe, of high quality, convenient, healthy and affordable.
According to recent surveys, it is estimated that 60% of the North American population is interested in consuming functional food related products in order to get a healthy advantage.
