Perth, May 6, 2008 (ABN Newswire) - Avoid skimpy action on greenhouse - half measures won't budge it.
Last year, the WA Sustainable Energy Association Inc. (WA SEA) described the Western Australian 2007 budget allocation to climate change action as "embarrassingly skimpy".
The 2007 budget delivered a meagre $20 million per year over five years for a few isolated actions on sustainable energy and the Carpenter Government failed in that budget to consider a joined-up, whole-of-government approach to tackle climate change.
"The 2008 budget must take Western Australia to a new place - one that creates the future. Western Australia must be a place that promotes government, business and community investment in energy efficient buildings, appliances and vehicles, and drive the development of a portfolio of renewable energy generation, including powering government operations on renewable energy," says Dr Ray Wills, CEO of WA SEA.
"The investment must be real, substantial, and deliver a raft of actions now for the future."
The 2008 budget must be full of actions - actions that commit WA to power all government operations from renewable generation; actions that make application forms for Solar Schools redundant and simply schedule solar installation at all WA schools so renewable energy is a standard part of the science curriculum; initiatives that provide all WA's public universities with access to facilities to experiment in both established and innovative renewable power generation and embeds leading-edge research in sustainable energy in our tertiary educational institutions; feed in tariffs for energy that both bolsters renewable energy generation and foster economic returns to schools, campuses and the broader community.
