Brisbane, Dec 19, 2011 (ABN Newswire) - Carpentaria Exploration Limited (
ASX:CAP) today announced the appointment of Dr Neil Williams as a Non-Executive Director effective 1st January 2012, strengthening the Company's Board and its geoscientific expertise.
Recently retired as Chief Executive Officer of the Australian government's geoscience agency, Geoscience Australia, Dr Williams has had a distinguished career spanning all aspects of mineral exploration, both in Australia and internationally.
Welcoming the appointment, Carpentaria's Executive Chairman, Nick Sheard, said "Dr Williams' appointment is a real coup for Carpentaria Exploration. His record speaks for itself - he has successfully led Australia's national geoscience effort for 15 years as well as having driven MIM's international exploration efforts," Mr Sheard said.
Dr Williams' resources industry and management experience would add momentum to the Company's growth plans and aid corporate governance.
Before joining the Australian public service in 1991, he spent 10 years in the mineral exploration industry with MIM Holdings, where he held several senior positions, including Chief Geologist - Exploration.
Commencing his public service career at the Bureau of Mineral Resources, Dr Williams became the longest-serving CEO of Geoscience Australia, leading its transformation into an agency delivering state-of-the-art geoscience research, products and services to both government and industry and with an annual budget of $169 million and 750 staff.
He represented the federal government on the Snowy Mountains Council - the government body responsible for the Snowy Mountain Hydroelectric Scheme - for seven years and served as chairman for five years, until the scheme was corporatised. He was also a director of Australian Marine Science and Technology, including serving as chairman for twelve years. Currently President of the 34th International Geological Congress (IGC), Dr Williams led Australia's successful bid to host this major international congress in Brisbane in 2012.
Dr Williams has won numerous Australian and international awards in his field, including a Public Service Medal in 2006 for the provision of geoscientific advice and the Society of Economic Geologists Lindgren Award for his research on the Northern Territory's McArthur River lead-zinc deposit.
He has also had a distinguished academic career, currently serving as an Honorary Professorial Fellow at the University of Wollongong, as well as a number of other industry and management bodies including the Queensland Exploration Council.
"We look forward to his contribution as Carpentaria makes the next step in its evolution, from a successful explorer to a cash-flow generating mining company with a strong project pipeline," Mr Sheard said.
