Companies start a joint project for the diesel retrofit market

Stamford, CT - September 23, 2008 - Clean Diesel Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:CDTI; XETRA:CDIA; AIM:CDT), the cleantech emissions reduction company, EnBW Regional AG, one of the largest German power network operators and H. Daugbjerg SA, a Danish filter specialist, today announced that the companies will present a new diesel retrofit emissions control system, ECDPF-1, at their joint booth during the IAA Commercial Vehicles 2008 trade show in Hannover, Germany, starting 23 September. (Hannover Fair, Hall 18, Booth No. A02).

According to extensive testing by the renowned German certification authority, TÜV Hessen (Technical Control Association in the State of Hesse), the retrofit system will provide a reduction of particulate matter emissions by up to 99%, without increasing secondary emissions of nitrogen dioxide (NO2). NO2 emissions are dangerous by-products of many catalyzed emission systems currently in use. The EnBW Clean Diesel ECDPF-1 emission reduction system is based on Clean Diesel Technologies' Purifier(TM) e4 technology.

The ECDPF-1 retrofit system can reduce harmful diesel emissions and raise compliance levels from Euro I to Euro IV standards, enabling vehicles to enter Low Emission Zones (LEZ) in Germany. The expansion of low emission zones throughout Germany is still ongoing and the actual number of 14 recently established low emission zones in cities and local communities across the country is anticipated to double this year.

Starting in May 2007, EnBW together with Clean Diesel Technologies and H. Daugbjerg A/S have been working together to provide a retrofit diesel particulate matter and emissions control system for commercial vehicles. EnBW is supported by TÜV Hessen with technical expertise, testing and ongoing support during the application process for Vehicle Type Approval at the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). As a pilot project EnBW has started to fit commercial vehicles of its own fleet with the ECDPF1 retrofit system.

The potential market, in Germany alone, includes about 170,000 approved commercial vehicles of Euro I, II and III types that require upgrade and retrofit to Euro IV standards. This could lead to a potential reduction of diesel particulate matter by 490 tons. In addition to reducing harmful emissions, the ECDPF1 retrofit system also increases vehicle fuel efficiency typically between 5 to 8% with a corresponding reduction of CO2 greenhouse gas emissions of up to 158,000 tons. Dipl.-Ing. Bert Flegel, Project Manager at EnBW commented on the objectives of the ongoing ECDPF-1 program at EnBW: "Implementing this technology should put EnBW in a technology leadership position when it comes to reducing harmful emissions from commercial vehicles. Together with our partners in local communities we are confident that this technology will significantly contribute to the protection of our natural environment and improvement of the overall air quality".

EnBW Fleet Manager Stefan Schneider noted: "The ECDPF-1 system retrofit of our fleet helps the vehicles meet the stringent standards required in order to enter low emission zones or when purchasing new vehicles compliant with EURO 4. Buying new vehicles compliant with EURO 4 may have cost us much as € 3 million".

Dr. Bernard Steiner, CEO of Clean Diesel Technologies said: "We are privileged to work with a strong reliable partner like EnBW. Tests at EnBW have demonstrated impressive performance and results in PM reduction and have convincingly proved the efficiency of our technology. Based on this technology, together with EnBW, we will provide many fleet operators with a cost effective and fuel-efficient alternative to buying new vehicles".
