Sydney, Oct 17, 2008 AEST (ABN Newswire) - Investor Relations firm Financial & Corporate Relations (FCR), which specialises in assisting mineral and petroleum companies with communication, this week received the communication industry's highest award for investor relations and was listed as one of the top 20 firms advising on mergers and acquisitions this year.

FCR gained the Public Relations Institute of Australia's Golden Target Award for Investor Relations for helping Resource Pacific during its defence battle against bids by New Hope Corporation and Xstrata.

In another development, the independent international mergers and acquisitions intelligence service Mergermarket, listed FCR 16th of all communication firms advising on transactions reported in Europe, according to the value of the transactions involved. FCR was involved in three M&A transactions worth Euros 8,802 million.

The Golden Target award is the sixth the firm has won in the past nine years, four of them for investor relations. The awards are judged by peers in the industry and judges commented on FCR's project: "This campaign adopted a strategic approach that maintained its focus on its communication objectives in a complex environment and over a sustained period," adding that "the campaign delivered excellent results and value for money."

Working with Citi and Allen Arthur Robinson on Resource Pacific's defence, FCR's work helped persuade shareholders in the coal company to support a $165 million rights issue after an initial $591 million scrip bid from New Hope Corporation put the company in play.

The communication effort supported the Resource Pacific's board's recommendation that shareholders should reject initial bids in order to secure maximum value either through Resource Pacific remaining independent or through an offer which reflected fair value. Resource Pacific was acquired by global mining giant Xstrata for $1.1 billion after a bidding war and prolonged takeover battle in April 2008.

FCR resources specialist, Kevin Kartun, said the public recognition of FCR's resources projects topped a highly satisfying year of activity and successes on behalf of 31 resources clients.
