The Australian shares closed lower as weaker commodities prices weighed on the resources sector. The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index fell 30.5 points, or 0.75 per cent, at 4031.7 points, while the broader All Ordinaries index shed 31.1 points, or 0.77 per cent, to 4030.4 points.
The Australian shares were marginally lower on Friday. On Friday the benchmark S&P/ASX200 ended 10.9 points, or 0.3%, lower at 3769.6, while the broader All Ordinaries fell 6.8 points, or 0.2%, to 3737.9.

Yesterday the Australian share fell on the weaker outlook in Europe and US markets. The S&P/ASX200 index ended the day down 1.8%, or 67.9 points, at 3604.4, while the broader All Ordinaries index lost 1.7%, or 61.4 points, at 3554.2.
The Australian share closed slightly higher lifted by miners. The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index ended the day up 0.7%, or 25.7 points, at 3672.3, while the broader All Ordinaries index rose 0.8%, or 29.3 points, at 3615.6. For the week, the ASX200 added 6% and the All Ordinaries rose 6.2%.
Most major Asian indexes ended higher on Monday except for the Japan market. Tokyo stocks hit by the bankruptcy of nonbank lender SFCG dropped 2.8% in early trading and ended 0.5% at the close. South Korea's Kospi jumped 3.2%, China's Shanghai Composite added 2% and Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index surged 3.8%. This morning the Nikkei average extended its tumble after US stocks sank to a record low since 1997.
